UK Jazz Artists To Watch In 2021.jpg

The third and final genre in the ‘artists to watch in 2021’ series is UK Jazz!

Jazz is certainly a genre we will be focussing on going forward as a platform. The UK jazz scene is filled with an array of multi-talented artists ranging from Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes, Ezra Collective, KOKOROKO, Kamaal Williams, Ego Ella May and many more... However, there is also a fair amount of lesser-known, up-and-coming Jazz artists who we feel are failing to get the recognition they deserve! Therefore, we’ve created and compiled a list of 9 Jazz artists to listen-to, and add to your playlists heading into 2021.

Again, we really hope you find some new music to listen to through this post, and please remember to support the musicians included in the article, by streaming/purchasing their music, following there social media pages, and generally showing your love and appreciation; as its tough out there for creatives and musicians at the moment! Heres a full list of the artists included in the article:

1. Ruby Rushton

The London based Jazz quartet Ruby Rushton have been dominating our Jazz playlists for a few years now. Expect to be treated to high energy, contemporary flavours of Jazz when listening to there stuff and be sure to go through there discography, as its jam packed with undiscovered gems!

2. Jackson Mathod

Jackson Mathod is one we’re really excited about going into 2021 and beyond. The multi-talented instrumentalist and vocalist is relatively new on the scene, but has instantly made a name for himself in the UK Jazz community with top releases like India, Spanish Bitter, The Park and Baba Yaga!

3. Laura Misch

The saxophonist, producer and singer-songwriter fuse’s Jazz and Progressive Electronica by exploring different feels and soundscapes. Her last album Lonely City (2019) is one we still listen to on a regular basis. We’re very excited to see what’s in store for Laura Misch in 2021.

4. Xvngo

Xvngo is a pioneering producer and saxophonist who puts a modern twist on Jazz; with his signature Jazz/Drill infused style. After repeatedly listening to Champagne Lick, The Prolific and Prelude were exciting to see what’s next for the groundbreaking Jazz musician!

5. Emma-Jean Thackery

Now how could I not include the award-winning multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Emma-Jean Thackery? Emma’s been conistently releasing high quality music years on end now, we really enjoyed her UM YANG 음 양 and Rain Dance EPs last year, and we’re excited to see whats next for the talented musician!

6. Jude The Obscure

The Manchester-based Contemporary Jazz artist Jude The Obscure can do it all - he produces, sings, and can even play a range of different instruments. We loved his debut project Moments which was released back in December, and we’re excited to see what’s next for the rising Northern talent.

7. Maliki

The duo consisting of ‘Tom on the drums’, and ‘Fil on the piano’ are really something special! They released two of our favourite Jazz tracks of 2020 in Penrose, and Egress, and they recently released a 2 part single named Complicated By Both/In The Form Of A Trail, so be sure to check that out!

8. Nubya Garcia

Nubya Garcia is a multi-award-winning saxophonist, DJ and composer who has transformed the UK Jazz movement/scene in many ways. It was hard for us not to include Nubya in this article; as we included her incredible album; SOURCE in our ‘Albums Of The Year’ list in 2020 a go check that album out if you haven’t already - it’s mind blowing!

9. Alfa Mist

If we coukd see our most played Jazz artist in recent years it would definitely be Alfa Mist. We’ve been a fan of his music since his debut release Nocturne back in 2015, and we’re praying the London-born producer, pianist, multi-instrumentalist and rapper blesses us with more great music in 2021!
