UK Jazz Artists To Watch in 2023

UK Jazz Artists To Watch In 2023

The UK Jazz scene has gone from strength to strength over the past few years. More and more artists seem to be emerging from the grassroots level, and we are constantly seeing artists of the highest order come up through the ranks. The real beauty of Jazz is the wide range of instruments that the genre has to offer from marvellous pianists to smooth brass players to melodic guitarists all the way to rhythmic drummers, Jazz has it all.

There were some amazing UK Jazz releases in 2022 from the likes of Yussef Dayes, Alfa Mist, KOKOROKO, Ezra Collective, and Nubya Garcia so we’re super excited about what’s to come in 2023 and beyond. We couldn’t include every great UK Jazz artist in this article as it would go on forever, so we have put together a carefully curated list of artists of all different calibres and styles in order to help you discover some new music! Let’s get into this:

1. B-ahwe

The incredibly talented Jazz and alt-soul singer/songwriter B-ahwe is the only vocalist included in the list, however, in my eyes, her unique and powerful vocals can also be seen as an instrument itself! Inspired by the likes of Minnie Riperton, Madlib and Chet Baker, B-ahwe is bringing a fresh take on the soul and Jazz with a focus on complex vocal arrangements and heartfelt lyricism. 2023 is bound to be a big year for the rising vocalist so give her a follow on socials and follow her journey!

2. Blue Lab Beats

Let’s not beat around the bush, it wouldn’t be a completed list without including London-based grammy and mobo-nominated Jazz duo Blue Lab Beats.. The trailblazing duo consisting of producer NK-OK and multi-instrumentalist Mr DM.of create unique and diverse soundscapes by blending traditional Jazz melodies and RnB/Soul keys, with Afrobeat-inspired samples and boom-bap Hip-Hop drums. In my opinion, their most recent album Motherland Journey was one of the best UK releases of 2022, and If there is one thing for certain, Blue Lab Beats are guaranteed to release good music in 2023 as they never miss…

3. Caytra

Caytra are a Jazz trio that we discovered through Bridge The Gap Management in early 2022, and we’ve been loving their music ever since! The trio comprising of Sam Ithell, James Gullis and Conor Cotteril create sounds and arrangements that represent each of the member’s unique personalities and their debut self-titled project ‘Caytra EP’ was both melodic and eccentric, drawing influences from Funk, Jazz, Rock and Hip Hop. We hope that Caytra continues turning heads in 2023, as their releases have been great so far!

4. cktrl

Multi-talented British musician, multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ cktrl creates music from the soul, and that is evident in his rich catalogue of work! Moulded by a fusion of his west Indian heritage and years of playing the clarinet and saxophone at a high level, cktrl’s unique sound and style is unlike any other in the UK Jazz scene! If cktrl continues to release music as good as ‘yield EP’ and ‘Robyn EP’ I have no doubt in my mind that the rising musician is going to start entering the mainstream over the next few years.

5. David Kofi

London-based pianist and musician David Kofi is most certainly one to watch heading into 2023. David Kofi draws influence from a mix of genres such as Soul, Gospel, Hip Hop, RnB and Jazz, and he cites musicians like Snark Puppy, Alfa Mist and Robert Glasper as his idols! over the past two years he has released two short but amazing EPs in ‘Kokoro’ & ‘Kokoro II’ so we’re looking forward to what he has to offer in 2023 and beyond!
