Jackson Mathod - ‘Travels In A Confined Space’ Album Review

The talented Trumpeter and Producer Jackson Mathod just dropped his debut 8-track album ‘Travels In a Confined Space’, which is now available to listen-to on all major streaming platforms. The project features a whole host of talented Jazz musicians ranging from Harry Pope, James Beckwith, David Mrakpor, Miguel Muziq & Joao Caetano and follows on from his hit single “Dumb People” which received support from the likes of Jazz FM, WorldWide FM and BBC London to name a few! If you haven’t already be sure to check out the album below:

‘Travel In A Confined Space’ kickstarts with “Cretins” a deep, hard-hitting jazz composition carried by a bass-line tough enough to make a concert hall erupt and house shake. Jackson previously stated in regards to “Cretins”, “that he often gets drawn in by great bass-lines, and that he’d like to think that Cretins is one of the tracks that follow on from his philosophy". The second track “Dumb People” is an eclectic, upbeat Jazz piece, jam-packed with energy and intricate summer melodies. The track was the hit single from the album and features two incredibly talented musicians in David Mrakpor on the Bass & Piano and Harry Pope on the drums; so theirs no surprise that it is as good as it is. The next track “Matador” gives off Flamenco vibes and has an exotic, tropical feel to it; you can really hear the influence traditional Latin music has had on this song. “Little Mouse” brings out Jackson’s humorous side. The talented musician comes through with hilarious narration over a laid-back, relaxing instrumental and the song really emphasises Jackson Mathod’s funny and quirky side! “Requiem” is compelling, thought-provoking and packed with energy. I’ve always been a big fan of ‘2-part tracks’, so i’m ecstatic that he’s incorporated one into the album. “The Moon” is a soul touching, slow track which is nothing other than elegant and graceful; it really is moving enough to make a grown man cry. And lastly, “Requiem, Pt. 2” is a great way to close out an incredible album! It certainly is one of my favourite tracks from the project, but realistically I couldnt pick out a particular favourite, as each track is phenomenal and groundbreaking in it’s own right.

All in all, the album takes you on a compelling journey through Jackson Mathod’s mind, giving you insight and perspective into the musicians experiences, and emotions over the course lockdown. ‘Travels In A Confined Space’ is a unique project; one that is hard to come by nowadays, and you can really tell how much heart and soul the talented musician has poured into creating such a masterful album. Jackson Mathod previously stated in regards to the album that "even if the pandemic has been tough for us musicians, I’ve found that it’s given me an opportunity to fully explore who I am as a musician and the kind of artist I want to be. I feel for the first time like this music is a true representation of me. Something I would never have got had it not been for the confines of lockdown". If you haven’t already, be sure to listen to ‘Travels In A Confined Space’ from start to finish and add all of your favourite tracks to your playlists.
