Rising pianist, vocalist and producer Insxght learned his craft and grew up in South East London. Musically speaking, he is known for his relaxing, meditative sounds, drawing inspiration from iconic artists like Robert Glasper and J Dilla. We got the amazing opportunity to catch up with the multi-talented artist to talk about his latest project, music-making process and future plans. Here’s what came of the interview:

Could you be so kind to introduce yourself to those that don’t know?

Insxght: “What’s up! I go by the name Inxsght and I’m a musician/producer who likes to jump on the mic and do a little something when I'm inspired.”

Why and when did you start music?

Insxght: “Tricky to answer. So, there’s always been a keyboard at my house so I would always muck around with that. I started producing towards the end of Year 6. I saw my older brother and cousins do it and it legit looked like another world. From there I was hooked, from a producer standpoint. From a musician standpoint, I started in Year 9. I Learned jazz piano because I liked jazz harmonies. I guess I kept it going from there studying both jazz and classical, along with other genres of music. As to why … I guess it’s my most comfortable way of expressing myself. Words don’t do emotions enough justice. Harmony is a language that is felt.”

How would you describe the music you make?

Insxght: “Honestly depends on the genre or who I’m making it for. I don’t like sticking to one type of music, that’s boring. Regardless of the genre, there is usually some jazz harmony/piano in there somewhere.”

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Insxght: Robert Glasper is the biggest hands down. My sound is the way it is because of his albums. I love the OG grime scene. So cats like Ghetts, Kano, Wretch 32, Chip, P Money, aswell! Singer wise Jordan Rakei, Gregory porter. There’s actually so many, I haven’t even touched Americans like Kendrick or Common. I won’t put them all down otherwise there will be a HUGE list.

If you could collab with any UK artist who would it be?

Insxght:Ghetts or Kano. I feel like I could push their music into a new realm that they either never thought of or couldn’t achieve without PROPER musicality.

What is your typical music-making process?

Insxght: Again, Depends. Sometimes I write the song before I have chords for it. Sometimes I have a melody then I build the song before I have the actual lyrics. Sometimes I just make a random beat and its fire, then everything else comes. There’s no real or best method for me. It just depends on the vibe!

Describe a day in the studio with Insxght?

Insxght: Erm … I’d like to say you’d have fun. You’d most probably have some random deep conversation, which will inspire the song. Or I’m just chatting a whole lot of rubbish, but it’s funny rubbish. Or at least I’d like to think so LOL…

What are your interests aside from music?

Insxght: I like mentoring young kids, I would’ve killed to have someone older, who looks like me, being there for me. I try to be that for the students I work with. I like Boxing, I used to box for a few years during college and university. I had to stop in my final year though, as I was too busy. I LOVE travelling but that's been put on hold since COVID-19 sadly…

What’s your biggest/proudest musical moment up until now?

Insxght: The release of my 1st beat tape. To see everyone so engaged with it the way they were was honestly heart-warming. I have no words.

Who are your top 5 Jazz Musicians of all time?

Insxght: Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Cory Henry, Mark Colonburg.

If you had to give your fans/listeners one piece of advice, what would it be?

Insxght: Don’t put me or anyone in a box that you listen to. This goes for anything, music, friendships, relationships, anything. No one likes being put in one because people are more than the thing they are known for the most.

What was your inspiration behind your latest project ‘Beat Tape, Vol. 2’?

Insxght: Nothing really. It had been a while since I put out music and my team and I felt that another beat tape was due. I, however, did feel like this project had to be a step up from the 1st one. Like you had to hear major improvements in my production skills and composition quality. That was very important to me.

What’s the story behind the numerous skits throughout the project?

Insxght: I wanted to capture the experience of being a Londoner during these strange times. Typical Londoners may go clubbing, meet up with family, have embarrassing stories from nights out, etc. I wanted to capture that whist it all being emerged in the music.

What’s next for you (any future releases)?

Insxght: I’m not sure … It’s either I release a few more before the end of the year, or I perform what I have for a while whilst creating new music on the side. I feel like I have enough music to perform a longish set at a few venues now, so I’m very happy!
